Show your work.
seriously, show it.
In attempt to fill my afternoon, I started and finished a book that I have seen being thrown around by so many creators I follow, called “Show your work” by Austin Kleon.
Here are the things that I got from it, taking notes for my future self:
There is value in documenting the process of getting to something, rather than only showing the finished product.
Most of the time, people also want to learn the process behind the product they are using, it adds a sense of humanity to it, and helps to show there is an actual person with desires and motivations behind it.
So, share your inspirations, your process, the thoughts that went into the product, before we can even see the finished product.
Play the long game.
This is something that I have heard all the time from people whose content I consume. To achieve great things, we need to do a few things for a very long time.
One of writer, Nicolas Cole, wrote on Quora every single day for a year. One of my favourite Youtubers, Ali Abdaal, posted two youtube videos every week for two years. These stories are so crazy and compelling and just show the power of consistency over everything else.
Being authentic.
Kleon emphasises the fact that there are no “guilty” pleasures, that all pleasures should be embraced. If there is anything we love, we need to be proud of our interest and love for it, and in due time we will find people that share the same passions.
There is no point of being around people who make fun, or take lightly the things that we care about!
Overall I think it is a book worth reading if you have a weird feeling of putting yourself on the internet. So many gems!
Vale, hasta la próxima :)
